Photos: Post Christmas Winter Wonderland of 2009

Here are a few Winter Wonderland photos from around Riverton, this past week, after heavy morning fog, left us coated with thick layers of Rime Ice. For a couple of days, it was reminiscent of the 2002 frost inversion that lasted nearly a month, producing some of the most spectacular rime ice scenery I have ever witnessed or photographed.

Hopefully, someday soon, I'll repost the photographs from that time, which was one of the experiences that really managed to get me interested in photography much more, than just taking a few snapshots at archery tournaments, etc.

Until those photographs are posted, here are the photographs shot just this past week. Click on the smaller thumbnails to access the larger versions of the photographs.

Photo: 'Til Spring Comes Again

In this black and white photograph, a patio chair, sans cushion, sits bare and idle, while the long shadows of autumn trees tell of the coming cold of winter. We are expecting wintry weather and snowstorms for the next few days. We didn't have much of an Autumn season, so hopefully, the Winter season will be full of gently-falling snow, bright, sunny winter days, punctuated with winter nights spent cozying up to a roaring fire.

It was warm today...

It was relatively warm today, so I spent some time outside listening to the wind blowing through the trees and enjoying the warm sun on a peaceful Friday afternoon. I shot some photographs of remnants of Clematis blooms after seeing a remarkable golden shimmer from them, gleaming in the afternoon sunlight.

It was a nice, peaceful afternoon and I wish I could have spent more time shooting photographs, enjoying these last tolerable days before anything outdoors comes with a frosty pricetag... Winter will soon be descending permanently on Riverton until spring, so these few days of warmth left until then are welcomed by me...

Autumn Retreat

I slipped outside for a moment, after seeing something amazing. A colorful, golden brown leaf, with a streak of green still running through it. Autumn! Just a fragment of Autumn, but it was still there! And for a brief moment there was bright sunlight, and blue sky!

So... I just had to grab my camera and shoot a few photographs, since I know this will be probably the most I get from what is left of the Autumn photography season...

Disappointed how Autumn photography season was cut short

I am seriously disappointed with how my Autumn photography plans have gone bust.

A recent cold snap and punishing snow storm, pretty much wiped out all hopes for some serious fall foliage photography that I had planned. I was hoping to spend a significant amount of time and effort shooting Autumn's colors better than I ever have, with a focus on stands of trees, etc. But the brutal cold and snow, dashed all promise for that. The frosty weather left all the leaves looking an ashen-green color, before being stripped off the trees by recent stout winds. Very few leaves ever managed to take on a golden or toasty brown color this year. It was a sad state of affairs for someone wanting to photograph the sights of Autumn.

I was able to shoot a few photographs that turned out fairly nice. I am hoping that when I look through all the photos I've shot over the past month, I'll find others that manage to convey some of the feelings and sights of how Autumn should look and feel. Up until I get a chance to search through my photos, here are some of the better autumn photographs I managed to shoot, in this all too short season.

Lost the fire...

My photography has suffered as of late. For some reason, I seem to have lost the fire for photography. Maybe because I am feeling stifled in regard to being unable to travel all over to shoot photographs whenever I want to. Not having freedom to travel on a whim, photographing different things, people, places, etc., manages to weigh on my creativity.

Being tied up as much as I have been lately, I can kind of understand this and maybe it is just that I am avoiding my photography more, engaging in other, more mundane pursuits and tasks. I should be getting into the swing of Autumn photography, as the leaves are beginning to turn on their fall colors, but I find myself avoiding the opportunities for photography that do arise. It may be that I have been feeling ill lately, plus trying to get things done before the winter snows hit, making photography less of a pleasure these days. I don't know just yet what is going on with me and my photography.

I should force myself to pick up my cameras, even if that means shooting pictures of a lamp post or something innocuous. I think maybe I'll start doing that after all the firewood is cut, split and stacked in a day or so... But for now, there's other things that need to be done before winter comes, so that won't happen until I find the appropriate time... It snowed just last night, so time is very short before winter arrives. I believe it is going to be a harsh winter.

Well, not much more to write about for now, so I'll post this entry and make yet another late dinner...

Starting over...

I haven't written in this journal for over a year so I wiped the old entry out and am starting over.

I am hoping to spend some time writing about my photography, using this as a publicly-accessible journal of thoughts on my photography, photography-related subjects, etc. I haven't been writing very much at all over the past few years, and I'd like to start placing word to electron again, so this is one of the few blogs/journals I'll be writing in. We'll see how much motivation I can muster for writing about photography.

I'm also hoping that this journal will also motivate me into shooting more photographs, as I have been slacking off on my photographic endeavors as of late.

Perhaps I'll write about software I try out, and maybe some thoughts on cameras, etc.

In the meantime, I'll think more about the direction I want this journal to go...
